Jean-Dominique Bauby is at the very height of his powers, the robust successful editor of 'Elle' magazine, who is living and loving life absolutely to its fullest. And then, only in his 40s, a sudden and massive stroke leaves him paralyzed completely in a rare condition that allows his vision, his hearing, and his mind to function perfectly. He can move just one eyelid. After his emergence from a coma of twenty days, a dedicated team of nurses teaches him to communicate by blinking as they read to him letters of the alphabet and he spells one word and then another.
